10 Best Tips to First Year Engineering Students to come-up

First of all let me convey my wishes to all of you as you guys have cleared your school life successfully. Now you came out of your first phase of life(schooling), and that exit door is an entry door of your most important and precious phase of life(college life).
You are being thrown into what the world speaks of, reality of life. I don’t know whether you will excel in your field after 4 years or not, but definitely you will excel in tackling the situations no matter how bad it is. This is what engineering teaches us as a complimentary course.

From the day of graduation till you get 1st job you will be judged upon mainly 3 parameters.

  1. Internships that you have done.
  2. Final year project
  3. Some what on CGPA.
Every summer, millions of students have a tough time selecting the right engineering college that will open doors to an exciting career. Let us assume that you made it to the engineering college of your dream. If you think that was difficult then you really don’t know what you are up against. Lakhs of engineers were in your shoes a few years back. Now they are successful and so can be you by following the below tip

1. Don't Expect Spoon feeding :

The upcoming years are going to be hectic where you will be bombarded with assignments, projects, tests and everything your professor feels that you need to be ready for your role as an engineer. Over the years you may have unconsciously bought into a message that goes like this: “My teachers know everything I need to know to be an engineer. Their job is to give lectures, and my job is to soak it up and then repeat it on exams.” That approach works in Intermediate but not in engineering. Problems don’t come neatly packaged with all the information needed to solve them. In fact, often the hardest part of a real problem is figuring out exactly what the problem is. Professors won’t spoon-feed you, you are expected to equip your own skills. But if you want to be the best, then you can only be the best through your own efforts.

2. Habit of "W" Questions

Asking question through: What, Why, When, Where, Who, etc., If you have difficulty in classes or can’t figure out the equations and block diagrams on the whiteboard or ppt then ask the professor to explain it again. “What is the use of the formula?” “Where will we apply this equation?” “When will it change?” "Why it occur?"

Even if you’re afraid a question may sound stupid, ask it anyway. I guarantee that others in the class are equally confused and will be grateful to you for having the courage to speak up. Never ask your instructor for help on a problem until you have made a serious effort to solve it by yourself. Bring in your flow charts, free block diagrams, formulas and calculations, including the ones that didn’t work.
Most teachers are also happy to help their students after class and guide them.

3. Read books

Some textbooks clarify difficult questions with practical illustrations and explanations. A good strategy is to look at a second reference on the same subject - a different text, a handbook, or a website. Even if you can’t find the crystal-clear explanations and examples you’d like, just reading about the same topic in two different places can make a big difference in understanding.
Read everything in your library and everything else that you can get your hands on related to your course work.

Reading will make your concepts and theories clearer and you will grasp the knowledge forever. Apart from subject oriented books, books of different genre will help you to develop your interpersonal skill set. Topics like money management, human behavioral, politics, Hi-Fi fictional stories, rational thinking will lift you up to the next level of life.

4.Team work

When you work alone and get stuck on something, you may be tempted to give up, where in a group someone can usually find a way past the difficulty.
Working with others may also show you better ways to solve problems than the way you have been using. Get group members, especially the weaker ones to explain all completed problem solutions before ending a problem-solving session. If everyone can do that, the session worked. Make your portfolio of projects. You might have a busy schedule but try to participate in every experiential learning project you can get your hands on. This will help you apply the knowledge that you gain in college and in addition you will have a portfolio of projects to show your prospective employer.
Build a good network. Engineering is not an isolated field but requires leadership and team work. You need to build your network in college so that you are not lost when you start your career. The best way to network is to have good relationships with your classmates, immediate seniors, alumni and teachers. In addition, attend seminars, lectures and conferences on-campus and introduce yourself to the speakers. Also check out your college’s alumni association. These are graduates from your college who want to connect with new undergraduates. Also use social media to stay in touch.

5. Consult experts

Sometimes you’ll run into a problem that completely stumps you. When practicing engineers run into such problems they consult experts. Your course instructor is an obvious candidate and other potential consultants include other professors who teach the same course, students who have previously taken the course, smart classmates, and tutors. Contact them early and not just two days before the final exam.

6. Internship, In-plant training, Industrial Visit

The best way to retain your knowledge is through practical experience so take up internship during the summer and winter vacations. Prospective employers love new undergraduates with practical experiences. Also try to build your portfolio of projects along the way. Interning will also help you to  prepare yourself towards industrial problems and knowledge. As an engineer you need to be an all-rounder to be the best in your field. Gone are the days when engineers were only required to be technically proficient, they need to be business savvy as well.

7. Projects

Take up a project that is doable at your skill level, but get your hands dirty. College's is a relaxed atmosphere, but you have the independence to do what you want, and if properly utilized, this can be a great asset while job-hunting. If you do something that is apart from what your colleagues are doing, and you do it well, it can work wonders during interviews. Do not get carried away by what your peers are doing, take this as the last opportunity to shine in an academic capacity. This is something that you can have full control over, because project development and execution cannot be learnt from books.Choose the project from your area of interest. The reason is that you will enjoy working on it. Don't take any project imposed on you by any faculty if you don't like to work on it. Don't ever take ready-made project from senior or from any other source. Because when you will work on project on your own you will be applying whatever you have learnt so far. In that process you may fail but you will learn a lot. Someone has said that choosing teammates for project is way more significant than choosing life partner. So here you will develop team building skills.
College project are important because
1. It's gives you the opportunity to test what you have learn so far in your academic.
2. Secondly it's also gives opportunity to learn new thing which is out of sllybus.
3.it's also teach you teamwork because most project are done in group.
4.it's shows you the real life problem .
5.it's increase your experience in that field much greater than what you may have achieved from college academics.
6.it's add in  ur resume/CV.

8.Online Courses

Online education or elearning is a learning system on formalized teaching but with the help of electronic resources. While teaching or learning can be based in or out of the classrooms, the use of computer and internet forms the major component of E-Learning. The advantage of online education includes

  •

  • LEARN AT YOUR OWN PACE - You courses are of basic level and you can generally finish them early(provided you are taking a concluded course and not an ongoing course) then there are those courses which are of advanced level and require a lot of time put up by the student, you can take your time in grasping those advanced level courses.
  • COST - An online course normally cost you less than a traditional course.
  • QUALITY OF CONTENT - Through online courses students have access to a quality of study material and lectures that maybe out of reach for many of those who are not in some of very best universities.
  • CHOICE - Generally you can get a course offered by various world class universities and you can choose among them. This is really helpful as I now I have the chance to take a course from a faculty whose teaching frequency matches with my learning frequency.
  • Some students have anxiety issues with being in a public setting like that of a traditional classroom and this could be avoided using an online course.

TIP - Always take notes while watching an online course lecture as that engages you more in what is being taught and personalized notes are always a great thing while revising the concepts.

9. Attending Conference, Workshops, Value added courses, Seminars etc.,

Some of the most valuable experiences a engineering students can have come about when they attend conferences, value added courses, summits, workshops and seminars. In addition to learning new things, business people can also build new professional relationships, gain friendships with like-minded individuals and even get to know clients and vendors on a more personal level.

10. Career Plan

Having a career strategy is important. It can help you manage the direction you want your career to take, the job skills and knowledge you will need, and how you can get them. In short, career planning can help you to realize your intentions and dreams. Especially if you want to have a stable future, proper career planning is the key to success.
