Skill set required for a Mechatronics Engineer

Skill set entirely depends upon each individual and their choice of field. Find the best yourself, and start  developing your knowledge from your faculty mentors, online courses, books, internet, value added courses etc.

There are five broad skills a mechatronics engineer must have;
  1. Mechanical engineering
  2. Electrical/Electronics engineering
  3. Software engineering/programming (firmware)
  4. Controls engineering
  5. Communication engineering.

The skills which a mechatronics engineer should acquire during his/her degree are
  • CAM software like Edge CAM, Master CAM & Siemens NX.
  • Modelling software like AutoCAD, Solidworks, ProE/CREO, CATIA, Unigraphics etc.,
  • Simulators like MATLAB & LABVIEW.
  • Knowledge over Programmable Logic controllers (PLC), SCADA, Human machine Interfaces(HMI) & DCS.
  • Robotics, RoHS, robotic configuration, design and development of robots.
  • MEMS software's like IntelliSuite, COMSOL Multiphysics CoventorWare, MEMS Plus and ANSYS
  •  3D Printers, Drones, self driving vehicles, Autonomous system  and similar popular technologies are all mechatronic in nature
  • Knowledge on Embedded Software's like  Arduino, Raspberry Pi, TI-Launch pad, etc.,

  • Software knowledge over C, C++, Python, Java.
  • Artificial Intelligence Techniques, Machine learning, Deep Learning
  • Electrical &instrumentation devices.
  • Mechanic Kinematic Logics.

  • Maintenance & Troubleshooting of motors, Panel wiring, Flow, Temperature, Pressure, Level Transmitters, PID controls etc.
  • All type of motors and worked on all faults and break down.
My point is, an ideal Mechatronics engineer is one who knows all of these stuff, or if not, when given chance can adapt to these stuffs and has the capability to design, develop and control any system. Get addicted to it. Go in depth, Learn them, Execute them. Join internship at recognized companies to see how they work. This will help you a lot.
